FAQ

What is Affinity?

Affinity is an app for anonymous, timeboxed voice conversations matched by what's on your mind. Pick a topic card, invite someone, and talk. No profiles, no followers, no DMs.

Is this a dating app?

No. There are no profiles, photos, or relationship mechanics. It's built for conversation.

Is it anonymous?

Yes. We don't show names or profiles. That said, voice is still voice, so avoid sharing personal info you wouldn't tell a stranger.

Why can't I enter free-text? Why are prompts curated in this alpha?

Because the alpha is small, and real-time apps live or die by liquidity (enough people overlapping at the same time). Curated prompt cards help in three ways:

  1. Better matches with fewer users: everyone is choosing from the same set, so you're more likely to find someone in the same lane right now.
  2. Less chaos: free text in a tiny alpha creates fragmented, low-quality feeds and makes moderation harder.
  3. Faster learning: with a fixed set of cards, we can measure what works and improve quickly.

Free text is planned later once there's enough usage to support it.

How does matching work right now?

In this alpha, matching is intentionally simple: you mostly see people who picked the same card (or very close within the same category). That means you'll sometimes see repeats like "Let's debate the GOAT" multiple times. Those are different users who chose the same card. This is by design to make the experience feel alive while we're small.

Will there be free-text prompts?

Yes. Curated prompts are an alpha constraint, not the final product. Free text is coming after we're confident the core loop is fun, safe, and reliable.

What does “alpha” mean?

Alpha means you're using an early version while we're still testing the core loop. Expect rough edges, frequent updates, and some features changing. We also run in scheduled windows so there are enough people online to match with.

Do you record or store voice calls?

No. Calls are live only. We don't record or save voice audio.

What data do you store?

We store the minimum needed to run the alpha and keep it safe (topic card selections, basic app events like invite/call start/end, and report/block actions). We don't ask for your name, contacts, or social handles. After the alpha, we plan to wipe alpha data and keep only anonymous aggregate metrics to improve the product.

What happens after 7 minutes?

The call ends automatically. You can also hang up anytime if you're not feeling it. No explanation needed. Then recast and talk to someone else. The goal is low pressure: a real moment, then it dissolves.

When is the alpha open?

We open in scheduled windows ("Alpha Nights") so there are actually people to talk to. If you install outside a window, you can browse, but you won't be able to start conversations until the next opening.

How do I join the alpha?

You'll install through TestFlight (Apple's official beta app). Tap "Join iOS Alpha" and follow the prompts.

What if I have a bad experience?

You can Report & Block in one tap. Blocking prevents re-matching. If something feels off, report it. It helps us keep the alpha safe.

Is Affinity meant for mental health support?

Not as a clinical product. It can be a place for honest conversation, but it's not therapy and not a crisis service. If you need urgent help, contact local emergency services or a crisis hotline.

Is it available on Android?

Not in this alpha.

This is an early test. Expect bugs, and thank you for helping shape it.

The Idea

Most social apps reward the polished version of you: the caption, the take, the story that's safe to post. But the thoughts that actually matter are often smaller and messier. A worry you don't want on a timeline. A question that feels too premature. A truth that's vulnerable, or just not finished yet. Affinity is built for those thoughts, the ones you'd never turn into content.

It's closer to talking to a stranger on a train. Side by side, low stakes, and surprisingly honest. The goal is to create more of that rare moment, "wait, you too?"

Sometimes that means being understood. Sometimes it means learning, exploring an idea out loud, or having a sharp debate with someone who actually cares. Either way, it's about finding resonating minds in the exact moment you're having the thought, without turning it into a performance or a permanent artifact. It starts with a prompt, and leads to a conversation that exists just between you.
